Section 6: What is copyright?

What does "ethics" mean?

It is when we do the right thing according to the values of our society, not because we'll get caught or punished, but because it is the right thing to do. Can you think of an example of ethical behavior from your own life? This site can tell you more about "cyber-ethics." Share it with your parents!

What is copyright?

  • The legal right for someone who creates intellectual property (books, music, drawings, photos, websites, etc.) to profit from the sale or use of that property.

Why do we have copyright?

  • To protect the ideas and creations of EVERYONE. (Kind of like how you don't want the student next to you to look at your drawing, and then turn in one just like it!)

How do we respect copyright?

  • Give credit
    • CITE - write down
SITE - the place (website, book, podcast, etc.)
SIGHT - where you found the information
    • All sources where you find information need to be credited. (This is what a bibliography is for!)
    • To credit a website in your bibliography you will need
        • The title (name) of the website - found in the top of the window bar
        • The address (URL)
        • The person and/or organization responsible for the website
        • The date of the most recent update
        • The date YOU looked at the website
  • Ask permission
    • If you want to use a picture from a website, or link to a site, you should email the creator of the site to ask for permission before you post your own site.
  • Do not change materials
    • Using someones work and changing it slightly DOES NOT make it your work. It is a form of plagarism.

If you have read all six sections of this tutorial - you are ready for the exam!
