National Library Week -- April 10 - 15, 2000

Our Library Aides planned several activities to celebrate this week. One provided a coupon to check out an extra book to whichever student was borrowing when 25 books had been borrowed already. As another activity our fourteen Speech Festival participants went into different classrooms all through the week to perform their poems and stories. And we sponsored the following special days:

Wear A Shirt You Can Read Day
Dress As Your Favorite Book Character Day
Read-IN Day

Tuesday, April 11 -- Wear A Shirt You Can Read Day

Classes looked for the shirts with the most words, funniest sayings, wisest comments, or the most creative or colorful designs. We had a lot of fun reading each others shirts all day!

Thursday, April 13 -- Dress As Your Favorite Book Character Day

Students were encouraged to wear at least three things to make them like their favorite book or story character. We took a lot of pictures for our school news show, Jaguar Informer. We are only putting a sampling on this page. The most popular character? Harry Potter, of course. After that it was Ash and Pikachu ... and there were Madelines, Amelia Bedelias, American Girls, Poohs, Cinderellas ... see how many you can recognize in the pictures that follow...

Friday, April 14, 2000 -- READ - IN Day

Different classes celebrated in different ways. Many brought in pillows and blankets and read in comfort during different periods of the day. Some classes invited guest readers, or shared books with other classes. Mr. Watanabe's fifth graders combined reading with playing board games that required reading. We all agreed . . . READING IS FUN!
