GRADE 1 STW LESSON PLAN

Pizza Party People
Teachers: S. Esteron and J. Lund

Subjects: Language Arts/Social Studies/Technology/Fine Arts

Areas within subjects: Listening, speaking, writing and composition,
economics, drawing, agriculture

I. Goals:

Use the book Curious George and the Pizza to focus students attention on the importance of all workers to society. Use student's culminating Pizza Hut Book-It Pizza Party to assess students understanding of the interdependence of workers and consumers. Promote an appreciation of the contributions of all workers to society. Facilitate the production of a class book representing workers involved in the production of their party and thank you letters to local Pizza Hut workers.

II. Content Standards:

1. Systems for production, distribution and consumption of goods and services

Performance Standards:

1. Explain how people work within systems for production, distribution and consumption of goods and services.

Content Standards:

1. Groups within economic systems

Performance Standards:

1. Describe the makeup of groups within economic systems including families, postal workers, bankers, firemen, teachers, etc.

Content Standards:

1. Functions and uses of speech: to entertain, discuss, converse, persuade, inform, read aloud, express feelings

Performance Standards:

1. Use speech to clarify thinking and broaden own knowledge and understanding.

2. Demonstrate discussion skills appropriate to various situations: taking turns, staying on subject, impromptu speaking.

Content Standards:

1. Conventions and courtesies of speaking and listening

Performance Standards:

1. Demonstrate courteous, attentive listening.

2. Participate in discussions in a relevant way. Follow direction of talk and stay on topic.

3. Seek clarification of directions or information by asking appropriate questions.

Content Standards:

1. Critical Listening Skills

Performance Standards:

1. Listen without being distracted.

2. Minimize communication breakdowns by listening, seeking clarification and checking perceptions.

Content Standards:

1. Types of Literature:

essays, poetry, short stories, tall tales, fables, legends, drama, novels, informational texts, research papers, reference materials, etc.

Performance Standards:

1. Connect literature to own life experience.

2. Use literature to build a larger understanding of one's world.

Content Standards:

1. Functions of writing: inform, create, express personal feelings, reflect, plan

Performance Standards:

1. Express self through writing for various purposes and audiences.

Content Standards:

1. Conventions of standard English writing: spelling, punctuation, grammatical form

Performance Standards:

1. Understand and use conventions of standard English writing (e.g. spelling, punctuation, grammatical forms) in editing own and others writing.

2. Use upper and lower case letters.

3. Demonstrate manuscript and cursive writing.

Content Standards:

1. Materials and manufacturing

Performance Standards:

1. Demonstrate an understanding that it usually takes several steps to make something.

Content Standards:

1. Production in drawing, painting, printmaking, sculpture

Performance Standards:

1. Create drawing, painting, prints and sculpture as exploration of media, records of observation and developing self- expression.

III. Objectives:

1. Students will listen actively to and discuss the book Curious George and the Pizza.

2. Students will "trace" the production of their pizza party, including workers from the business, agriculture, transportation, communication, hospitality and education fields.

3. Students will demonstrate an understanding of the concept of interdependence between workers to provide a service/product by:

a. contributing to a list of workers involved in the production of their pizza party.

b. contributing one page to class book: Pizza Party People

c. being able to justify, if necessary, their selected Dinocolor

card.

4. Students will write thank you letters to local Pizza Hut workers.

IV. Instructional Practices:

- Small and large group discussions

- Creative expression through writing and drawing

- Group sharing

- Brainstorming

V. Materials:

- Curious George and the Pizza Margaret and H.A. Reys

- Dinocolor Cards Carears Productions

- Chart paper

- Markers, color crayons, color pencils, pencils

- Writing paper

- Pizza Hut Book-It Program Materials (e.g. coupons, chart, forms , etc.)

- Pizza Hut Book-It Pizza Party provisions (e.g. pizza, napkins, boxes, etc.)

VI. Procedure:

1. Have Pizza Party.

2. Read and discuss Curious George and the Pizza Party as an introduction to the interdependence of production, distribution, and consumption of goods and services.

3. Working backwards from eating the pizza, trace the workers involved in providing the pizza party.

4. Record workers named by students on chart paper.

5. Students select dinocolor cards representing workers on class chart and any additional cards they can justify.

6. Update chart to reflect additional workers selected and justified.

7. Students color dinocolor cards.

8. Assemble class book: Pizza Party People.

9. Students draft, revise and finalize thank you letters to workers at local Pizza Hut.

10. Students illustrate thank you letters.

11. Deliver thank you letters.

VI. Assessment:

1. Students participate in discussion of Curious George and the Pizza.

2. Students contribute to class chart of workers.

3. Students select and justify as necessary dinocolor cards that reflect their understanding that many workers were needed to provide the pizza party.

4. Students prepare thank you letters that reflect their appreciation and recognition of workers involved.
