Visitation to San Carlos Charter Learning Center

Three teachers from Innovations visited San Carlos Charter Learning Center, a California Distinguished school, on their way to the California Charter School Conference in March 2001. CLC has multi-aged classrooms with theme-based instruction. The Innovations team met with the CLC administration to dialog about the successes and challenges of their charter school. The information sharing session was followed by a tour of the classrooms. Many thanks to the San Carlos staff for sharing their school and ideas with us!

San Carlos Charter Learning Center is located in a former public school that is now rented out to CLC and two other schools - a middle school and a Christian school. The middle school buildings are in the process of being renovated and a
new library and locker room were built for the students. CLC rooms will also undergo renovations.

The CLC campus occupies two wings of rooms located behind the middle school. A gift basket of mac nuts and coffee candy was brought to share with the staff.

The first room we visited was Miss Margie's Kindergarten class. This is the only class that is not multi-aged, a result of space and student number considerations for the school. Visit their website for more information about their curriculum and classroom.

CLC has two classes with first and second graders working together. We visited Robin's 1-2 class. Robin is a Kamehameha School graduate now living in San Carlos. Students were engaged in writer's workshop when we arrived.

The colorful totem poles seen in this picture were made from empty plastic containers.

The macadamia nut shortbread cookies we brought were a hit with the kids.

Technology was abundant at CLC. K-2 classrooms had desktop computers and an iBook cart that was shared for projects.

Our tour guide was Inga, CLC's Resourceful Schools Project Director. Thanks to Inga, we gathered information that will help us with the startup of our charter school.

Visit Robin's webpage for information on scheduling, curriculum, events, and more.
