AN INTRODUCTION TO CENTRAL MIDDLE SCHOOL

Location: The site of Central Middle School is historically significant as the location where Princess Ruth Luka Keelikolani had her palace built in 1878. In 1908, the building was converted to Central Grammar School. The present buildings were opened in 1926. The school became a junior high school in 1928, an intermediate school in 1932, and a middle school in 1997. In October of 1994 the buildings of Central Intermediate were placed on the Hawaii Register of Historic Places. The school continues to honor Princess Ruth's generosity in providing a location for our school by celebrating her birthday February 9 of each year.

Over the years of Honolulu's further development, the neighborhoods around Central Middle School have become the urban center of Honolulu's political, economic and cultural life. Our campus neighborhood includes high rise buildings, small businesses, a shopping and cafe district, Chinatown, Foster Botanical Gardens, historic buildings and government buildings.

Student Population: Students at Central Middle School represent a powerful diversity of heritage and experience; with many students bringing their first-hand knowledge of distant lands, languages and cultural values to share with the school community. Large blocks of our student population trace their ancestry to the Philipines, Chuuk, China, Samoa, Tonga, Hawaii, and various other Pacific Island, Asian or other national origins. Hawaii is at the crossroads of diversity. Our students are encouraged to draw strength from their identities and develop new skills to fulfil the potential of their future. Life long Learning is our goal!

Academics: Central Middle School offers a middle school curriculum of math, language arts, social studies, science, health and physical education. Electives in fine and practical arts, foreign language, sports, and technology complement the basic program. There are also programs for learners of English as a second language and learners with other diverse needs. To meet the instructional and personal needs and interests of the student population, several middle school concepts have been instituted. These include advisory periods, teaming, and interdisciplinary units.
