Information Literacy Standards:

Benchmarks for Collaborative Teaching

The following information skills benchmarks and rubrics were prepared during Evaluating the School Library, a summer course taught by Dr. Nancy Everhart at UH Manoa. Our project team was concerned about information skills instruction being integrated with classroom content, and wanted a list of grade level benchmarks based on the AASL Information Literacy Standards that we could use with teachers in planning collaborative lessons.

We hope that having grade level benchmarks, and the performance rubrics to match them, will facilitate planning between librarians and classroom teachers. The posted benchmarks and rubrics are only a draft. They were created by three different elementary school librarians, in three very different school settings. Our intent was to use them as a framework when working with teachers to develop an information skills curriculum tailored to the needs of the individual school.

Thank you to all of the librarians who graciously shared their curriculum plans with us when we were working on this ... it was an enormous help. Please contact us if you have questions or suggestions. This is definitely a work in progress!
