Information Literacy Standards: Benchmarks for Collaborative Teaching
Grade 1 Skills List (Shafter Elementary)

Standard 1 &endash; The student who is information literate accesses information efficiently and effectively.

By the end of grade 1 the student will be able to:

  • Identify the information he/she is seeking.
  • Know the location of non-fiction books in the library.
  • Locate books on shelf in the easy section.
  • Define and use the terms: author, title, illustrator, and illustration.
  • Locate and identify the title page and the table of contents of a book.
  • Read a picture for information.
  • Tell what an encyclopedia is.
  • Use the table of contents with a little assistance.

    Standard 2 &endash; The student who is information literate evaluates information critically and creatively.

    By the end of grade 1 the student will be able to:

  • Define terms: fiction and non-fiction.
  • Identify which resources are fiction or non-fiction.
  • Gather information from two sources.
  • Cite the title and author of sources used.

    Standard 3 &endash; The student who is information literate uses information accurately and creatively.

    By the end of grade 1 the student will be able to:

  • Use the information gathered to create a graphic representation (picture) and discuss it.
  • Assess the graphic representation for accuracy.

     

    Literature Connection:

    By the end of grade1 the student will be:

  • Introduced to poetry.
  • Introduced to Caldecott Medal books.
  • Introduced to folktales.
  • Read picture books, easy fiction and non-fiction books.
