Information Literacy Standards: Benchmarks for Collaborative Teaching
Kindergarten Skills List (Shafter Elementary)

Standard 1 &endash; The student who is information literate accesses information efficiently and effectively.

By the end of Kindergarten the student will be able to:

  • Identify the library as a source of information.
  • Identify the parts of the book: front/back cover, spine, title and author.
  • Listen for specific information.
  • Understand that the library is arranged in order.

    Standard 2 &endash; The student who is information literate evaluates information critically and creatively.

    By the end of Kindergarten the student will be able to:

  • Identify a "made up" story and differentiate it from "real" information.
  • Choose books for information needs.
  • Be aware of the terms fiction and non-fiction.
  • Tell where information was found.

    Standard 3 &endash; The student who is information literate uses information accurately and creatively.

    By the end of Kindergarten the student will be able to:

  • Retell information gathered.
  • Assess the retelling.

    By the end of Kindergarten the student will:

  • Enjoy nursery rhymes.
  • Listen to ABC and number books, simple poems, predictable books, and picture books.
  • Respond to children's literature presentations.
