| | Ten Step Project Development Process Bena Kallick * Patrick Laherty * Ed Murphy * John Schiller * Don Zundel | |
1. Establish criteria and assessment methods for assignment Clarify content and standards to be addressed Set skills to be applied Assign process(es) to be demonstrated State methods and measures for assessment
2. Guide learners in a process to determine project focus and audience. Generate Ideas: -Brainstorm (list, web, grid ideas related to topic, accept all contributions, ask for clarification) -Categorize / classify -Look for associations / links -Look for likenesses/differences -Draw out themes -Ask questions -Determine key question(s) - list questions related to topic, develop an essential question worthy of being researched Determine type of project: -Presentation - linear (sequential), interactive (allows choices or branching) -Activity Structure - (student based), research, information and resource access, processing and publishing -Public Service Announcements - video, stills, full motion -School features and documentaries -Plays, dramatizations -Audio - oral history, radio program Identify technology resources: -Audio recorders -Cameras (camcorder, digital still and movie) -CD-ROM, DVD, Laserdisc -Scanner -Computer software (word processor, spreadsheet, database, multimedia authoring, image editing, web page authoring, animation) -Web resources, on-line projects, images, sound, text or e-mail exchanges Identify audience for the work: *Peers *Instructor *Parents *Community
3. Coach learners to write three paragrph proposal 1. Paragraph one - state the essential question 2. Paragraph two - discuss the focus of the work (what, who, will be addressed?) -Subject -Audience -Type of project (i.e. student activity, linear or interactive, web, etc...) 3. Paragraph three - describe necessary resources to do the work (how will the work be done?) -Hardware and Software -Kinds of resources needed (images/pictures, sounds, text, etc...)
4. Review project proposals Discuss with project team/developer: -The proposals relation to the assignment -The feasibility of the proposal -The relevance of the proposal to the essential question Help the team discuss: -The skills, time and resources needed to carry out the proposal -Priorities in doing the work
5. Share project proposals Groups share project proposals Total group responds: - What did you like about what you just heard? - Do you have any suggestions for the team to consider? Teams decide whether or not to revise proposal based on input of the group
6. Learners develop storyboards, script or outline Index cards, post-its, paper or chart pads are used to organize and sequence the project Task roles and responsibilities clarified by team members
7. Teams get approval for storyboards, script or outline Storyboard, scripts, outlines are reviewed with team members Resources, instruction are provided as needed
8. Learners engage in project work Every member is a teacher and learner
9. Premier/Demonstrate projects
10. Assess projects Feedback should be constructive, specific, respectful, engaging individual team members, the audience and instructor(s) Review characteristics of effective critique Responsibilities of: -Learner (identify own learning, communicate their learning to others) -Audience (give feedback on what they see, tell what they learned) -Instructor (give feedback, offer critique for growth) Getting Audience Feedback What did you learn from this presentation/project? -Be specific as possible -Provide info to learners about what they did that was effective (how did it engage you, what content, strategies, insights came to you?) Getting Learner Feedback What did you learn doing this project? -Subject matter content -Technical skills -Planning, organization, implementation -Personal insights (learning about your own learning) Giving Instructor Feedback -Ask clarifying questions (can you tell me more about...? -Make sure learners understand and achieve purpose of project -Ask questions, give feedback that promotes growth (what if...?, in your next project...)
