MAKING A WOODEN KONANE BOARD

 

Materials needed:

7 1/2" square piece of wood

7" square piece of paper

blue crayon

hammer

nail

sandpaper

an adult who can drill impressions into the wood

 

GRIDWORK

  • 7 " square piece of paper
  • Mark off 7 - 1 inch squares across the top and sides of the paper
  • Fold and crease at each mark
  • Mark each point of intersection to give you 6 marks down the side, 6 marks across the top then filling in the center - you should have a total of 36 marks

 

PUKA GUIDES

  • The gridwork will help you as a guide for each puka
  • Tape paper to 7 1/2" square piece of wood
  • Use a hammer and nail to make marks in board
  • Each puka will be the place to drill a deeper impression

 

 

 

Have an adult use a router to make each puka into a deeper depression

 

 

SAND

  • use coarse, about 100 grit, sandpaper to sand each puka, then surface
  • use a 50 grit piece of sandpaper to do finishing sanding

 

FINISHING TOUCHES

  • rub board with kukui nut oil
