Ha`aheo Elementary
School serves a rural residential and
agricultural community on the northern
edge of Hilo in the district of Wainaku,
on the island of Hawai`i. After several
years of increasing enrollment, the
student population has stabilized at
around 170. It serves a diverse group
which includes Hawaiian / part-Hawaiian,
Filipino, Caucasian, Portuguese, Japanese,
and others in its ethnic
make-up.
Ha`aheo, which
follows an inclusive
developmentally-appropriate practices
philosophy, is organized in three
multi-age groups rather than the
traditional K - 6 grade levels. Narrative
progress reports are used in place of
traditional graded report cards. Ha`aheo
is also on a modified year-round school
schedule. These reforms, and others, have
come about through the School/Community
Based Management process.
