The 5th and 6th grade classes
go deeper into their knowledge by finding the answers
themselves or discovering for themselves why things in the
Hawaiian culture are the way they are. Students
research and learn the major importance of the Hawaiian
culture which is life of both land and people. They
learn to appreciate and to express their discoveries through
ancient ways of creativity which is through music &
hula. Using the kukui lantern analogy, they know not only how to create a kukui lantern and how to use them, but they also know the appropriate time to use them and how to appropriately maintain and appreciate them. 'Aina Phase - Land appreciation -Review the importance of land to the Hawaiian people -Students learn about the place they were born and raised -Students find a place that interest them - How is that place important? -Do extensive research about the place that interest them. -Make a presentation about their special place - creativity is encouraged adding art, photographs, drawings, exhibition, video, computer powerpoint, etc. -Create a poem about their special place -Create a 12 line song, chant about their special place -Create a hula to their song, chant. Po'e Phase - People appreciation -Review important people in Hawaiian history -Students find out their genealogy at least 4 generations back -Students do an oral interview with an elderly person they admire - emphasizing their way of life. -Students also learn about elders in the "Ho'omau Series" -Make a presentation about either the elder of the oral interview or the Ho'omau series - creativity is encouraged adding art, photographs, drawings, exhibition, video, computer powerpoint, etc. -Create a poem about their special person -Create a 12 line song, chant about their special person -Create a hula to their song, chant.
