Task/Instructions:There are three topics on this page: Bird Catching Techniques, Uses of Feathers, and Working with Feathers. Your project group may decide how to divide up the research work. Keep in mind that after you are done with your research, you share what you learned with the other members of your project group. All three of you will be responsible for knowing ALL of the information well enough to share with the others. You will then illustrate your activity for your Hui's Ahupua'a Mural.

Many of the Ali'i wore capes, cloaks, and helmets, made of feathers. These feathers came from different colored birds that they found in the mountain forest areas. Although some of the feathers they used were found in the ground it wasn't enough. For this section, you will be responsible for researching how they caught the birds that they used in their featherwork:

• Describe two ways that the Hawaiians caught birds.
• Did they kill the birds, or did they set them free?
• What kinds of birds did they catch?
• What tools did they use for bird catching?

In addition to researching the answers to these questions, you will also be responsible for drawing pictures of the tools they used to catch the birds and placing them on the appropriate place on the mural.

• Describing the different objects that they created using feathers.

• What color feathers did they use?
• Who used the featherwork?
