MUSIC

The music program at Kalama Intermediate consists of four different programs, each designed to develop the unique musical talents of our students.

Band


The Band Program is headed by Ed Queja. The Band Program begins with an introduction to music in 6th Grade and moves through Grade 7 fundamentals and culminates with advanced skills and performances in Grade 8.

Bell Ensemble

The Bell Choir is headed by Ed Queja. The Bells Program is designed to meet the particular interest of music students interested in hand bells. Instruction runs from Grade 6 to Grade 8 and allows students to develop the fulfillment and attainment of musical skills through a non-traditional instrument.

Chorus

The Chorus Program is headed by Ed Queja. The Chorus Program is designed to develop performance skills, knowledge, and understanding of muscianship. Musical arrangements from a variety of styles and periods are used. Students learn the techniques of breath control, phrasing, tone placement, diction, and other voice skills. Instruction runs from Grade 6 to Grade 8.

Polynesian Music

The Polynesian Music Program is headed by Naomi Nakama. This course is designed to help students understand and appreciate people, culture, art, and music from the Polynesian Triangle. Instruments include folk instruments, rhythm implements, xylophone, vibraphone, ukulele, and whenever possible, steel guitar. Instruction runs from Grade 7 to Grade 8.
