Dear Kalama Ohana,

I am excited to start my third year as Kalama Intermediate School’s Librarian! Coming to Kalama last year was a dream comes true for me.  I am thrilled to be here.

Mrs. Harrell and I are continually improving the library program to give our students access to top-quality information, both print and online. Due to an extremely generous budget last year, we were able to add 3,153 books to the Kalama Library collection, significantly updating and adding to award-winning literature as well as many aspects of science, math, social sciences and Hawaiiana.

In addition to adding new books, we also added many new services.

  • We extended our service hours to 7:30 – 2:45
  • We added 17 computers (a mix of new and used)
  • We installed mini lounges to encourage reading and study
  • We started teaching information literacy to Kalama classes. These lessons include database research, OPAC use, Website evaluation, online research techniques, finding and using online and print resources, citation of sources, etc. We are looking forward to continuing and adding to our information use lesson repertoire this year and in years to come.

One policy change this year is that we will no longer permit computer games to be played on the school library computers.  We offered this service last year on a trial basis, and it conflicts too much with the academic use that must remain our first priority.

We would like to extend an invitation to all Kalama ohana to come see what is available to our students in the library.  Email or call me to set up an appointment, and then check in at the Kalama Intermediate School main office 5 minutes before your meeting time.

Please feel free to call or email me at any time during the school year with any questions or concerns.

With warmest aloha,  Jody Brown
