The Egyptians had a large supply of food. They were good at baking and brewing. They made over 50 different kinds of bread. Bread was the staple food in the Egyptian diet. Cooking was done over open fires or roasting pits.

Animals were kept for meat and milk. Foul, fruit and fish were plentiful. Since there was no sugar, honey was used as a sweetener by the rich and the poor people used dates and fruit juices. Lentils were dried and made into soups , stews and cakes. People grew watermelons, grapes, pomegranates,figs, dates onions, lettuce, celery, cucumbers, asparagus, cabbages and peas. Egyptians liked strong-tasting vegetables such as garlic and onions. Vegetables were often served with an oil and vinegar dressing. Fish and meat had to stored in a special way. Beer was the most popular beverage in Egypt. The men usually did all the cooking. They used kitchen tools such as pestles, mortars and sieves.

Food was served on baked clay dishes and bowls and was eaten with spoons or with fingers. Only the rich had knives for eating.

It is believed that the people of Egypt ate lots of candies and sweets because some mummies were found with decayed teeth
