Aloha! My name is Jessica and I live in Pahala. I am writing about the flood caused by 36 inches of rain. It all started on November 1st. The rain grew harder and harder. It was a disaster. I was scared. I couldn't believe that there was a flood. I could see the flood from my house. The Highway looked like a river from where I was.
The water in the gulch flowed so hard that it broke parts of some bridges. There are 6 bridges around Pahala and a ford crossing. All of these areas are damaged. The water was so high that I could see water going over the bridge from my house. I usually can't see the bridge from my house. My brother Greg and I was scared. We were scared because of the thunder, the lightning, and the water from the gulch.
There was no school for two days because of the hard rain and the flood. The Ka'u High School teachers live on the other side of the flood.
The citizens of Pahala were isolated (they were stuck) including myself. The people who lived in Pahala that were in Hilo or Kona couldn't get back to their homes. In some places people couldn't get out of the flood danger on their own. A bull dozer had to get some people out. In other places, the National Guard had to help some people get out too. In Pahala a lot of people couldn't go to work. My mother rented a van from Hilo for an excursion which had to be canceled because of the rain. To return the van, my mother and I took the long way to Hilo through Kona and had to come back the same way. It took nine hours of driving.
The storm was an exciting event. When the storm was finished there was a lot of damage. (Back to Student List)
I didn't like the flood. My back yard was full
of water. I had a swimming
pool. It was fun to stay home for a while. I played games with my parents. The worst part is when my parents went to work. I had to stay with my grandma. Staying with my grandma was fun for one day. The next day, it was boring it was raining and my grandma and I didn't know what to do. Whenever I stay with grandma , I just eat and sleep all day long. Sometimes I don't even go to my grandma's house, because I sleep until my parents come home from work. Then i can't sleep at night, because I slept all day long. My dad's friend got caught in the rain and his house almost got flooded [ one inch more ] I hope they fix the road soon. I can't get food from Hilo and stores aren't going to make money, because tourist can't pass. I also want our island to be like it always was. I want our island to be beautiful again. There was a terrible flood in Pahala. The flood
was strong. No one can go to Hilo and shop to get food. My brother
and I were watching T.V. Suddenly we herd a lightning bolt. We
all looked out the window to see where did the lightning come
from. Then my brother said the lightning hit the field. I became
a little scared. I was just watching T.V., then the lightning
just came. When the lightning hit I jumped from my chair. After
that we had a phone call from our cousin. They said that their
house was flooded with water. The water was all the way up to
their knees because their house is by the bridge, down hill. Me
and my family went down to the bridge to look at all the damage
the flood made. When we were working, the radio said that there
is no school till Wednesday. So when we came home, I got to play
with my friends. It was when the flood was done. That time,
we had a lot of fun. (Back to Student List)
WELL, WHEN PAHALA HAD THE
FLOOD I WAS AT HOME. OUR HOUSE HAD LOTS OF PUDDLES. I WAS GOING
TO GO OUT AND PLAY BUT MY
FATHER DIDN'T LET ME.
THEN WHEN IT CAME TO FRIDAY, AFTER THE FLOOD, I WOKE UP AND MY DAD SAID, "DO YOU WANT TO GO TO O'AHU?" I SAID YES. SO I PACKED MY CLOTHES AND WENT TO THE AIRPORT IN HILO. WE WENT ALL THE WAY AROUND THE ISLAND JUST TO FLY OUT OF HILO BECAUSE THE WATER WASHED THE HIGHWAY AWAY. WE COULD HAVE FLIED OUT OF KONA BUT MY BROTHER WANTED TO FLY OUT OF HILO. THE PLANE RIDE WAS VERY FUN. WE COULD SEE ALL THE ISLANDS. WE STAYED FOR ONE WEEK AND TWO DAYS. IT WAS A LOT OF FUN.
WHEN WE CAME BACK MY MOM SHOWED
ME SOME PICTURES OF THE FLOOD. IT WAS A VERY MEAN DISASTER. THERE
WAS A LOT OF ROCKS ON THE ROAD. BELOW PAHALA THERE WAS A TELEPHONE
POST ON THE ROAD. THE WATER JUST OVER FLOWED OUT OF THE GULCH.
THE GULCH BECAME VERY BIG. THE WATER EVEN WENT OVER THE BRIDGE.
THE COUNTY MEN EVEN CLOSED THE ROAD.
THEY ALSO MADE A NEW ROAD. THE NEW ROAD IS IN KAPAPALA. THE
NEW ROAD IS VERY SMOOTH AND NICE. MY MOM SAID THAT THEY WERE NOT GOING TO OPEN THAT ROAD BUT THEY COULDN'T HELP IT.
I HOPE THEY GET THE HIGHWAY FIXED PRETTY SOON. THAT WAS THE MEANEST FLOOD I HAVE EVER SEEN IN MY LIFE.
THEY SAID THAT TODAY, 11/14/00, IS GOING TO HAVE A FLASH - FLOOD. THE WHOLE ISLAND IS GOING TO HAVE IT AGAIN. I HOPE WE DON'T HAVE A MEAN DISASTER AGAIN BECAUSE THEY'RE JUST STARTING TO FIX THE ROAD AND THERE'S ANOTHER FLASH FLOOD COMING. THEY SAID THAT HILO IS ALREADY STORMING AND RIGHT NOW AT OUR HOUSE, 11/14/00, IT'S STARTING TO GET CLOUDY. IN PAHALA IT IS PROBABLY RAINING RIGHT NOW BECAUSE IT HAS BIG FAT CLOUDS ON THAT SIDE. I HOPE PAHALA REALLY STORMS SO THERE IS NO SCHOOL FOR MAYBE A WEEK. THEN MAYBE I CAN GO TO O'AHU AGAIN. I LIKE GOING UP THERE. IT'S FUN AT O'AHU. I HAVE LOTS OF AUNTIES AND UNCLES AND ALSO COUSINS UP THERE. (Back to Student List)
Heavy rain caused big floods. The heavy rain damaged bridges. The heavy rain also damaged roadways. The heavy rain left the soil saturated. At the school, the rain made giant puddles; kids went boogie boarding in the puddles. The road that goes to Hilo and Na'alehu which is an intersection can't be crossed due to debris on the road. The raging water in the gulch was approximately ten to twenty feet above the bridge going to Hilo. Giant trees are found in the gulches. Farms were damaged at the Ka'u Coffee farms in the mauka area. When the flood occurred, certain teachers of Ka'u High and Pahala Elementary and students weren't able to come to school because of road blocks and the heavy rain. No school resulted.(Back to Student List)
