Welcome to the Waiakea Intermediate School Home Page. We have just started learning about the Internet and this is our first Home Page. Our goal is to share information with other schools about our own unique learning experiences.

LOCATION

Waiakea Intermediate School is located in Hilo, Hawaii, on the eastern side of the island of Hawaii. It is the largest island in the island chain that makes up the State of Hawaii. Our island is known as the Orchid Island and is also known as the Big Isle. Our island flower is the lehua blossom, while our state flower is the yellow hibiscus. Hilo is a very rainy city with an average rainfall of 137 inches of rain each year. It is also the southern most city in the United States of America. The southern most town in the USA is also located on this island. It is the small town of Naalehu. Our school's address is 200 W. Puainako Steet. We have fourteen permanent buildings and five portable buildings. The buildings at our school are made of wood or cement blocks. Our roofs are made up of galvanized iron to protect against Hilo's rain. There are many trees and grassy areas around the campus.

LEARNING TO SURF THE NET

At the present time, our school has Internet access through a local provider from one computer in our Computer Lab. During the Spring Break in March, 1996, parents, students, teachers, and community volunteers helped to wire our school for the first phase of our local area network. Once the rest of our equipment arrives, we can enjoy multiple Internet access. We have enjoyed learning to "Surf the Net" to view home pages created by others, meeting with our community and parent volunteers who taught us how to plan, organize, code our home page, and learning about this means of electronic publishing. It is our hope that others in our global community will be interested in what we have posted and that they will visit our site often to look for changes made to our postings.
