The Pearl City Tavern was opened in 1939. It was owned by George and Irene Fukuoka . During the war they served thousands of servicemen who came from Pearl Harbor. The Pearl City Tavern was only 20 minutes away from town.. They also had dances. A former teacher from Lehua Elementary School used to work at the tavern. Her name is Mrs. Maeda. She worked there for four years. The owner was her ex-husband . She was only twenty one when she started working. When she started working there beers were only $1.25 cents and the drinks were only $1.00. In the tavern there was a monkey bar that had real monkeys in it. That was how it got tourists attracted to the tavern. The Pearl City Tavern is no longer there. Cutter Ford, a car dealership, is now there.
This is one of their postcards showing the live seafood they sold, the bonsai trees they grew, and the monkey bar that had real live monkeys in it!
This is another postcard with a better picture of the monkeys.
This is the Cutter Ford car dealership that is now where the Pearl City Tavern used to be.
