About Our School
Waimalu School is one of five elementary schools which
provide learning opportunities for students in Kindergarten
through sixth grade in the Aiea community. Waimalu is
bordered by Moanalua Road and Kamehameha Highway. The school
campus sits approximately 2/3 of a mile from the East Loch
of Pearl Harbor.
Waimalu is one of several schools in the Aiea Complex
that operates on a modified calendar. Students begin the new
school year in August and finish in June with three
intersessions in October, December, and March. Intersession
courses are rotated among the Aiea Complex schools to
accommodate the needs of the entire community of learners
and to pool resources available at all the campuses. The
students enjoy a six week summer vacation in June and July
before starting their next grade level.
For the past three years, Waimalu students have
participated in intramural competitions between Complex
school sixth graders in volleyball and basketball. Students
from the fifth and sixth grade also demonstrate their math
skills in the Aiea Math Bowl.
Other extra curricular activities include a library club,
a Junior Police Officer program,a Student Council, a school
chorus, and a camcorder crew which tapes and edits weekly
news broadcasts for Waimalu students.
Currently, the majority of classrooms are connected to
the Internet through the school's LAN (local area network).
There are at least two computers in every class which has
Internet access as well as a lab for group instruction. A
set of Alpha Smart® keyboards are available for teachers
to reinforce typing skills and to transcribe files which can
be downloaded onto classroom computers and edited or printed
at a later date.
