There are many educational standards which this course covers. Many overlap in their meaning. Ratings for each standard will be kept and reported to the student

Rating

1. Create an original art work which communicates an idea, experience, or story.

P=Art work communicates an idea, experience, or story with no need of explanation.

I=Art work needs some explanation to be understood.

N=Art work does not relate to an explanation of the intended idea, experience, or story.

2a. Identify an art work's general subject matter, themes, or symbols in a written description.

2b. Create an original art depicting a subject, theme, or use symbolic representation in the piece.

P=Identifies an art work's subject matter, theme, or symbolism in a written description. Original art work clearly portrays a subject matter, theme, or symbolism.

I= Doesn't identify the subject matter, theme, or symbolism clearly. Art work needs some explanation to be understood.

N=Unable to identify subject matter, theme or symbolism in an artwork. Own art work doesn't seem to communicate any meaning.

4. Show an understanding of the role the visual arts play in the lives of people by matching art to its particular culture, time or place.

P=Able to match correctly.

I= Has a few errors.

N=Many errors in matching art to its time, culture or place.

5a. Identify characteristics of some artists and their styles of work. Match artists to their art work.

5b. Express feelings about various styles of art and accept other students' views.

P=Matches art with their artists correctly identifying their style. Expresses personal feelings and judgments of art styles with explanations. Accepting of other viewpoints.

I=Has few errors in matching. Able to correct. Expresses feelings with some explanation. Doesn't always accept other views.

N=Has many errors in matching artists and their styles of work. Expresses feelings with no explanation. Not accepting of all views.

1a. Uses computer and its parts to meet the needs of the course. Able to store one's work.

1b. Uses the appropriate programs to follow the course lessons and produce art work independently.

1c. Able to send messages and art work through e-mail.

P=Has very little problems using the computer and programs to follow the lessons , participate in activities like chat and email, and to produce art work and writings.

I=Needs some help or tutorials with use of the computer to accomplish goals of the course. Asks for help when needed. Follows through with advice.

N=Consistently needs much computer assistance. Unable to follow recommended tutorials or advice.

2a. Participates in group activities and discussions.

2b. Produces original work in art creation and writings.

2c. Participates in chat/discussion on the proper use of the Internet.

2d. Participates in chat/discussion of personal property concepts related to computers.

P=Participates in a positive and ethical manner in activities and production of original work. Gives credit to other people's work, realizing personal property concepts.

I=Shows an awareness of caution and property rights concepts. Sometimes doesn't give credit to unoriginal ideas and work.

N=May use other artist's work as models for their own. Doesn't cite credit of others.

3. Uses the computer for the purposes of the course: produce art work, write descriptions and critiques. Participate in email and chat discussions.

P=Participates every aspect of the course: production, writing, and communication. Solves own problems with very little help.

I=Participates in most aspects of the course, needing reminders and some help to solve problems along the way.

N=Participation in most aspects of the course is often interrupted by problem-solving difficulties.

4. Participate in email, chats and writing activities to communicate with others.

Same as above.

5. Use the computer to find more information about at least one artist. Share the information.

P=Effectively shares information researched about an artist. Able to cite URLs sources.

I=Shares some information of at least one artist. Unable to cite URLs.

N=Shares sketchy information about an artist. Unable to cite URLs.

1. Participates in chats/discussions on the proper use of the Internet.

P=Aware of responsibility in the use of the Internet. Shows understanding and follows cautions discussed.

I=Needs reminding of the cautions of using the Internet.

N=Uses Internet inappropriately.

2a. Participates in personal interest inventory.

2b. Identify jobs in the art community other than artists.

2c. Sets goals for career and education, or to improve self.

(Note: Students are not held to attain artistic goals in life.)

 P=Willingly expresses personal interests, values and sets goals to verify them or to improve ones self. Identifies three or more artistic careers other than the artist.

I=Expresses personal interest, etc. Identifies two or less other artistic careers other than the artist. Sets simple goals for self.

N=Expresses personal interest, etc. Unable to identify two artistic careers other than the artist. Sets some goals for self, but needs help to set applicable goals.

3a. Expresses, in art work as well as chat and writing, individual thoughts, ideas, and judgments.

3b. Completes assignments. Participates in discussion to create class work criteria.

3c. Participates in development of classroom rules.

3d. Respects ideas and art of others.

3e. Asks questions when in need of help or more information. Uses resources to find answers to questions.

3f. Describes how the elements of art work together to make a piece of art.

P=Consistently uses own ideas and judgments about art, respecting other's views and work. Turns in assignments on time. Helps develop and follows class rules. Asks for help when needed. Able to successfully describe how parts of an art piece work together.

I=Has some difficulty coming up with own ideas and judgments about art, yet show respect towards others' work. A few assignments may be late. Doesn't contribute much to the rules, but follows them most of the time. Has a little difficulty seeing how parts of a whole work together in an art piece.

N=Has much difficulty coming up with own ideas and judgments. Forgetful of others' feelings when critiquing. More than half assignments are late, therefore not following class rules. Does not ask questions when needs help. Unable to describe the parts that work together to make the whole art piece.

4a. Participates in developing classroom rules in chat situation.

4b. Leads a discussion.

 P=Consistently contributes ideas in chat discussions. Willing to lead by calling on others in the chat room.

I=Contributes to discussions. Willing to lead, but may be too reticent.

N=Never contributes to discussions. Never leads.

 P=Applies correct information in writings and quizzes, and follows directions consistently.

I=Seems to need some help interpreting information and directions. Has some errors in quizzes and following of directions. Able to correct self.

N=Many errors in information and does not follow directions in assignments. Unable to correct self.

2. Responds to art work by relating it to oneself, or life experiences.

 P=Consistently finds a relation between an art work and own experiences or experiences of people.

I=Not always sees a relationship of art and life experiences.

N=Does not mention any relationships between art and life.

3. Writes paragraphs of description and response to art work.

 P=Includes verified information as well as personal response in writings.

I=Has some errors in information or doesn't include personal response in writings.

N=Neglects to verify information as well as respond in writing.

4. Uses standard sentence structure with satisfactory spelling and punctuation in all writings.

P=Consistently uses standard sentence structure with correct spelling and punctuation.

I=Writing has some sentence, spelling , and punctuation errors but still communicates the intended ideas.

N=Many errors in conventions of writing render the writing incomprehensible.

Assessment

The final grading for this course will be based on the General Learner Outcomes of the Department of Education. Standards ratings will make an impact on performance grades.
