The Makaha Guidance Program (MGP) is a systematic, developmental program that integrates critical guidance concepts and skills into the basic curriculum and teaches students problem solving skills and self-control. The MGP was conceived by a Makaha Elementary School counselor in 1989 as a novel way to help students make better decisions and thereby provide effective treatment for long term behavioral problems that have proved resistant to traditional approaches.

The MGP was implemented school-wide in 1994-95 with the goal of providing Makaha Elementary School with a safe, cooperative and caring learning environment in which students are able to solve problems independently, work cooperatively, and behave responsibly. While full implementation of the plan will integrate guidance into all curriculum areas, the initial focus is on the reading and language arts curriculum. In its present form, the MGP integrates nine major guidance concepts and skills with reading and language arts curriculum. All classes from kindergarten (K) through grade 6 use the guidance-related materials. Each month, teachers read and discuss one story unit, use follow-up activities, and teach the guidance strategies.
