Super Kids! Super Staff! Super School!
Attendance: Sign-in sheet filed in PCNC office.
WELCOME: Ms. Brenda Abaro, school clerk and former PCNC, led the group in an inclusion activity, "Give a Little Aloha." She then introduced Mr. Nelson Shigeta to the audience.
SCHOOL REPORT:
Mr. Shigeta shared that the school is in restructuring phase, because although we met the Math AYP, we fell short of the ELA benchmark by 2%. The Complex Area Superintendent, Mamo Carreira, has indicated that Makaha Elementary will be an America's Choice "intensive" school, which calls for more frequent assessments and reports.
Mr. Shigeta shared that while this may be the case, the school's goals as stated in the school's Academic Plan will remain the same:
a. Strategic actions are to:
i. Refine and extend the implementation of standards-based classrooms,
ii. Refine/extend curriculum maps that align to the Hawaii Content Performance Standards (HCPS III),
iii. Implement monthly assessments.
2. Provide comprehensive support for all students.
a. Strategic actions are to:
i. Analyze Hawaii State Assessment data and target instructional strategies in order to provide students with specific interventions.
ii. Refine and implement Makaha recess program to address targeted GLOs and standards.

Parents concurred with the school's goals, and the direction of the school's Academic and Financial Plan.
PCNC: Our new PCNC, Mokihana Abaro, was introduced to the guests and invited parents to see her for volunteering opportunities.
GRADE 6 VIDEO: Our sixth graders recently completed their garden at the farm; the project included the students drawing designs for the garden. From a combination of plans, the garden was "built" with their own hands. Teacher Michael Sarmiento and EA Elizabeth Kalama shared a video that chronicled the beginning to end of the sixth grade garden.
BOOK OF THE MONTH: October's Principal's Book of the Month was Diary of a Worm. It was read aloud by VISTA coordinator, David Lopes. Parents were encouraged to discuss the book of the months with their students at home.
PTA: PTA spokesperson Elizabeth Kalama invited parents and friends to join the PTA and help to make things happen at Makaha!
GRADE 3 CHEER: Third grade students were led by teacher Ms. Kristen Risberg in a cheer written just for recess activities at Makaha. The cheer highlighted healthy eating habits, exercise, personal grooming, etc.
GRADE 1 MUSIC: Students from Mr. Spencer Harris' class (and some not) performed a song, accompanied by one student on recorder, one student on bongo drums, and one student singing.
Following the entertainment, parents and friends were invited to have snacks and talk story with the staff. The meeting was adjourned at 7:45 PM.
Respectfully submitted,
