How big is the Earth? How much is a million? What is the biggest number? What is the smallest number? How much money is there in the world? What are the chances of winning the lottery? |
Second Semester (MathApplications 2)

Third Quarter: |
A study of curves, including circles, ellipses, parabolas and many other mathematical curves. Applications in engineering, physics, navigation, orienteering, seismology. How do they design roller coasters? How high, how fast, how long and how do they know? How does the captain of a submarine know where he is? How do rescue teams find lost people in the wilderness? |

Fourth Quarter: |
A study of solids, figures in three dimensions including cubes, pyramids, cones, cylinders and spheres. Applications in architecture, package design, movie-making, crystallography. What does 3-D mean? How many dimensions are there? How do you make things look 3-D on a 2-D page? What is perspective and how is it created on paper or canvas? How do architects design buildings? Who makes the structures stand up? |
