I-MATH PROJECTS

These pages are dedicated to the teachers in I-MATH. In this course, the teachers each create a project for their students. The following is a project completed by one of our I-MATH teachers.

Geometry Concepts

Mushtaq Sayed teaches at Lanai High School. He describes his project as follows: "Regarding the project, I developed it for my Core geometry course. It is an alternative math course for Special Education students in grades 9-12.  The students in my class have either emotional impairments or have learning disabilities.

We began the year working out of books and completing worksheets. This definitely wasn‚t very exciting to them but they were used to math classes being this way.

When I introduced GSP to the class, they were excited about being able to do their work on the computer. They liked the fact that they didn‚t need to make circles and angles using a compass and protractor. However, when we got started, they had difficulty with some of the basic commands.

As a result, I developed a four-step tutorial/lesson. First, there is an Introduction to GSP. Second, there are lessons on Geometry Concepts. Third, there are lessons on Construction. Finally, there are lessons on Measurements.

These steps worked really well. Students shared that they liked that they could go back and look at how to do something. They also liked the graphics. They liked how the graphics were exactly what they were going to see. One student who did not like geometry when she first started, now sometimes stays in during lunch recess to work on GSP.

After each lesson, students had to demonstrate the skills they learned. They had to show that they knew how to start GSP and begin a lesson. They had to submit their definitions and take a quiz to demonstrate their understanding of geometry concepts. They had to demonstrate their ability to use GSP by constructing a list of objects. Finally, they had to include measurements with their constructions to show their understanding of this feature in GSP.

I wanted to integrate technology into my classroom but did not know how. Taking this course and T3 has equipped me with the necessary skills. I hope to expand on this project and create other projects so students will enjoy the learning process."
