Commonly referred to as "The Rocks," these five pieces of sculpture by Artist Mamoru Sato are favorite objects on which the students play.

"The playground sculptures were designed and fabricated especially for Maunawili School in 1977. Their forms are based on abstractions of sea animals or creatures." -- Mamoru Sato, 12/7/99

The sculptures are constructed of an inner core of polyurethane foam with a 2 inch thick layer of terrazzo (black marble chip aggregate mixed in black cement) reinforced with several layers of galvanized steel mesh.
