Aloha! The KCLC
is a complex-wide after school program funded by the federal 21st Century Community Learning Center grant and administered through the Windward School District of the Hawaii State Department of Education.

We believe that students who connect their learning with their lives are motivated and engaged learners. By building alliances with schools and the community, we can help students exceed their own expectations and contribute positively to their environment. We wish to give schools, educators, and families a framework that supports innovative teaching ideas, moral development, along with existing academic standards and curriculum.
We continuously strive to apply the Hawaii Content and Performance Standards in our curriculum.

Our program offers opportunities for academic and personal growth to students in grades 2-12. Services include small group tutorials, writing and science labs, enrichment classes, mentoring programs, and community outreach. KCLC operates out of each school site, with our central office located at Laie Elementary.

Great things are being said about KCLC and Sunset Elementary. Thank you to Mr. and Mrs. Crawford for the recognition and positive feedback. Read what they have to say..

This is a tale of two schools, and our hope is that after reading about our experience, all of the parents appreciate this wonderful gem of a school as much as we do.
We have had the good fortune to enroll our son, Everest, in the third grade here for the winter semester this year, and for kindergarten three years ago. Everest has also been attending school in Massachusetts when we are there. MA has the reputation of having some of the best educational institutions and public school systems in the country. We can tell you that we have been very happy with the high level of education that he has received there. But, we know for a fact that the level of education here at Sunset Beach- including curriculum, teaching staff, and resources, is by far superior to what we have in MA.
Many people in the greater Boston area were concerned that we were transferring to a small country school in Hawaii with “possible” lower standards. We had the benefit of being here for Kindergarten with Mrs. Keohohou and EA Mrs. Howes, and we know that this alone had put him way ahead of the other children in his class when he attended first grade in MA.
We are also impressed with the Ko'olauloa Comm. Learning- after school program that meets here for homework, tutoring, drama, dance, and enrichment five days per week. Truly, this is an amazingly dedicated and creative group of educators led by Juliette, who actually has my child begging to go everyday after school- “and please don't pick me up early”. Kudos to them for doing such wonderful work for our school kids.
The entire staff at this school is to be commended for doing great work, and it is obvious to us that this all stems from the top. The professional tone is set by our Principal, and Mrs. Holmberg has instilled her work ethic everywhere we look at this school. How incredibly fortunate we are to know that our kids are treated with dignity and respect by all staff at all times.
We expect that when we return to school in MA., we will find that Everest is a bit ahead of the rest of his class, after spending this semester with Mrs. Dubiel and all of the SBES staff. We feel very blessed to have the opportunity to be part of this school community and we hope you feel the same way!

Students who are engaged in learning behave better in school, have better work habits, higher educational aspirations, improved attitudes toward school, a greater sense of belonging in the community, and better relationships with parents.
