Read Across America was held from March 3 to March 9. Parents and children bonded while reading together during this event. The total number of students who read with theirparents for 7 days wer 91. Total number of students that participated: 112.  It is our hope that RAAyou will continue reading together… it could be a picture book, magazine, newspaper, comic, cereal box…  just enjoy reading and sharing thoughts and wonders.
During Read Across America, we had talented lunchtime guest readers: Mahalo Nui Loa to Mrs. Sugiura, Mrs. Kanahele, Mr. Lief, Mr. Kasadate and Mrs. Kāne for bringing literature to life!
Also, on March 13, a mini-assembly was held to celebrate reading and give out prizes to all those who participated! There were free books and prize drawings for Book Fair Bucks, posters and school supplies! We are all winners everytime we read!

Congratulations, Pū‘ōhala ‘Ohana,
for achieving AYP:
Good Standing, Unconditional

award
Photo: Donna Ikeda, BOE chairperson
Lea Albert, Complex Area Superintendent
Jan Yuasa, Pū‘ōhala Academic Advisor
Alexis Kāne, Pū‘ōhala Principal
Pat Hamamoto, DOE Superintendent

Pū‘ōhala has been recognized with an Annual Achievement Award for the second consecutive year! We've shown improvement in HSA scores for the past three years and achieved Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) the last two. This has earned Pū‘ōhala the NCLB rating of In Good Standing-Unconditional.The AYP goals have jumped this year to 58% proficient in reading and 44% for math. The students and teachers need the support of all parents as we near this year's April test dates.Mrs Kāne and Mrs. Yuasa accepted the award at the Hawai‘i Distinguished Schools luncheon on February 1st.

Distinguished School Award
On November 13, 2006, Pū‘ōhala Elementary was recognized as a Distinguished School for meeting AYP for the 2005-2006 school year. Principal Alexis Kāne is holding the acrylic award with Complex Area Superintendent Lea Albert at her side. It is our goal to achieve AYP once again this year.
