Accomplishments of MYAC

Through MYAC, Radford built essential alliances with key military personnel who shared a vision with Principal Stevens to build a better Radford. In 2002, four rooms were dedicated to military individuals to recognize their contributions to Radford High School. Four classrooms were converted to state of the art computer labs (2 PC and 2 Mac labs).

Transition Center is dedicated to retired Command Sergeant Major Clarence Wilhelm who has been a significant fixture of MYAC since 1995. In fact, he was responsible for bringing Colonel Pote into the picture; Colonel Pote arranged the first meeting among the representatives from the four military installations to discuss a community issue. Principal Stevens felt that Wilhelm always demonstrated an “aloha spirit,” especially when he gave up so much of his time to better the school. With this in mind, Principal Stevens felt that it would be most appropriate to dedicate the Transition Center in his honor.

Career and College Resource Center is dedicated to Colonel David A. Tom who, along with the JVEF, was instrumental in allocating money for technology labs in three schools ($1.2 million for Radford High, $500,000 Aliamanu Middle, and $250,000 Red Hill Elementary Schools) and coordinated the initial budget with the state. Colonel Tom’s efforts led to four state-of the art computer labs at Radford.

Information Technology Center is dedicated to Colonel R. Wayne Newman who was a J1, Director of Personnel under Admiral Blair of the Pacific Command. His role as co chair of the Joint Venture Education Forum allowed Radford funds for additional computer laboratories. His knowledge was key in designing and furnishing the labs.

Information Technology Resource Center is dedicated to Colonel Joseph Brown who is an original member of JVEF. He recommended Radford as a pilot scool for establishing information techhnology. He also told the committee that all labs should be air conditioned. He had a son and daughter who attended the school, both of whom graduated from Radford.

The Arts and Communications Academy laboratory is dedicated to Admiral Dennis C. Blair. Admiral Blair was instrumental in the creation of the Joint Venture Education forum that distributes federal funds to Hawaii's public schools each year since 2002. As commander of the Pacific Command, Admiral Blair fostered the cooperative efforts between the military and Hawaii's DOE that resulted in seven state-of-the-art computer laboratories (statewide) by 2003. This lab is also the home to Radford's RamPage Productions.

Other Accomplishments: MYAC has become an open venue between the school and community to resolve and address important issues that may surface within the school.

• LAN System upgrade/ Computer laboratories: In 2002, with assistance from our military partners, the school was able to upgrade the Local Area Network. In addition, through combined efforts of Colonel Tom, Colonel Brown, and Colonel Newman, students returned to Radford High School to four state of the art computer laboratories. Each lab is air conditioned, equipped with new computers, state of the art furniture, plasma screen televisions, and a standing podium with microphone, Elmo projector and projector for multimedia presentations. Currently, the labs are being used to prepare the daily morning bulletin and monthly newspaper, computer literacy, English, and multimedia classes, conduct internet research create electronic portfolios, and address career and college research.
