Dr. Malia Chow
Aloha! I am a marine molecular biologist at the University of
Hawaii's Institute of Marine Biology located at Coconut Island. My primary
research interest focuses on the use of biotechnology to protect and
conserve Hawaii's marine and reef fish.
I grew up in Hawai'i where i graduated from Maryknoll High School. I
left for college soon after and received a B.S. in Biochemistry from the
University of Washington in Seattle. I went on to earn a Ph.D. from the
Medical school at the University of Pennsylvania in Philadelphia. Then, I
started working with fish as a post-doctoral fellow at the Center of Marine
Biotechnology at the University of Maryland. Whew, I've been away a long
time!
I am very excited to be back in Hawaii doing work that I love. In
addition to my research, I am very committed to increasing opportunities for
kids in Hawaii to learn more about our ocean and perhaps, even to pursue
careers in science. Working with the DOE through E-School has provided me
with a wonderful opportunity to work closely with both teachers and
students.
