The Strange Sled Race
By Samantha,Grade 6
Long ago their was a fire and snow goddess. As you would know fire and snow are the complete opposites. So fire and snow goddesses didn't get along to well. So one day the snow goddess decided to slide down Pele's (the fire goddess) volcano. She was there with two other women.
Pele, appearing as a stranger, wanted to race the snow goddess. Pele borrowed a sled from one of the women. Pele raced the snow goddess but lost. Pele made an excuse that the sled didn't fit her. Pele borrowed a sled from a taller women. Pele and the snow goddess raced again but Pele still lost. Pele started turning red. Her eyes were glowing. Then the snow goddess knew who had been racing her, Pele. So the snow goddess told pele that she could borrow her sled. Then Pele and the snow goddess raced another time. Pele through her arms in the air and told the lava to swallow up the snow goddess.
The lava was shooting up in the air throwing bubbles. The lava ran down the volcano catching up with the snow goddess but as it slightly touched the snow goddess it hardened and formed into new land for Pele's volcano, Killuea. The snow goddess stomped her foot, sleding down the volcano as fast as she could, trying to keep away from the lava. But when ever it touched or almost touched the snow goddess it dried and hardened into new volcanic land. Pele was as mad as fire. She was so jealous that she made the lava go all day long. Pele could not calm down. Her eyes were glowing as red as fire. After that experience, the snow goddess never ever came to Pele's volcano, Kilauea. As for the other two woman, they never ever came to Pele's volcano again. Now you know how well the fire and snow goddesses got along. They didn't just fight because of fire and snow but because Pele was jealous she couldn't beat the snow goddess in racing down her volcano.
You now know who pele is so I will tell you the tradgedy of her lava rocks. I am going to tell you about a man and a woman. But before I do, I will tell you some data from the park of Killuea. When you visit the volcano Kilauea, there is a room where the ranger takes you to tell you some things about Kilauea. There is a wall which has letters from people all around the world.
The letters explain why they sent back their lava rocks. One lady took some and this is what happened:
1.Her car got stolen.
2.Her husband got sick.
3.Her car got stolen two more times.
Now I will tell you about a boy:
1.He got in a car crash.
2.His dad is sick in the hospital.
These people sent back their lava rocks to the ranger. The ranger puts their letters on a wall.
