Would you like to be in a family that gathers food all day? The Nez Perce people did just that. They didn’t go far from their fishing villages. Kouse were bulb-like roots that taste like turnips. They also dug other roots and picked berries.

They killed  small animals for food. They hunted elk and antelope on foot. They also hunted moose, bear, and the prized buffalo.
Salmon was a recognized food. The salmon was caught in the summer supplied about ninety percent of the tribe’s food needs for the whole year! They also caught trout in the Snake River.
