In old Hawai'i, the fruits of the mamaki were used as a laxative and thrush remedy. Its bark and young leaves were also used medicinally. The long, strong fibers were used to make a kapa (tapa) but darker brown and courser than one made of wauke, the paper mulberry plant introduced by the Polynesians. The dried leaves of this plant can be used to make a tea which was good for general "run-down" conditions and can be bought in many stores in Hawai'i for making tea nowadays.
