Student's Internet/WAN
Acceptable Use Policy
Students who use the DOE Internet/WAN systems are responsible to
use the computer resources in support of the educational mission.
The use of Olomana School's computing facilities and the Internet is
a privilege, not a right. The Internet and WAN are Olomana School
sites, the same as though they were a classroom or learning center.
All Olomana School policies and procedures apply to the use of the
Internet/WAN. If a user intentionally violates any of these
provisions, his or her account will be terminated, and there may be
other disciplinary consequences. If a student does NOT have his/her
parent(s)/guardian's permission to use these resources, it is his/her
responsibility to abide by that decision and not attempt to access
these systems.
Definitions:
Internet: The Internet is a network of over three million
computers in many countries. It allows communications from Olomana
School computers to computers throughout the world. The main
features of the Internet system are the ability to: a) communicate
with other networks in other parts of the world; b) transfer files
between locations c) send messages called "e-mail," and d) gain
access to information in other parts of the world on demand.
WAN: The WAN is a computer network that connects computers
within the DOE; it is a closed system in that it does NOT allow
communications with computers outside of the DOE. The DOE WAN system
includes the same features as the Internet, but only staff and
students can access its information.
Terms and Conditions:
1. Appropriate Use
- Prohibited transmissions: Users shall not transmit any
material that is in violation of U.S. or state laws or regulations
such as threatening, defamatory or obscene material and material
protected by trade secret. Interception of any electronic
communication in violation of U.S. or state laws or regulations is
also prohibited. Students doing legitimate research on
controversial topics shall do so only with the guidance of a
faculty member.
- Respect copyright and trademark laws: Users shall respect all
U.S. copyright and trademark laws and licensing agreements
pertaining to material entered into and obtained via the system.
The user agrees not to give, lend, or sell copies of software to
others without the written permission of the copyright owner. The

otherwise place any material that is protected by copyright or
trademark onto an Olomana School computer and/or to the Internet
or WAN.

privileges and may result in disciplinary action. Vandalism is
defined as any malicious attempt to harm or destroy hardware,
software, or data of Olomana School or of any other user on the
Internet.
- Personal restrictions: Students shall not give out any
personal information (full names, telephone numbers, addresses and
social security numbers) without first checking with their parents
or teachers; they shall not meet with anyone they meet "on-line"
without first checking with their parents or teachers. Students
shall not reveal any personal information (full name, telephone
numbers, address or social security numbers) of other students,
faculty or staff of Olomana School.
2. Privacy
- Electronic mail on the Internet can and may be monitored by
the DOE. Olomana School reserves the right to review all
electronic communications on both the Internet and the WAN.
Messages relating to or in support of inappropriate/illegal
activities will be reported to the authorities.
3. Responsibility
- Students of Olomana School must remember that when you
telecommunicate with individuals, groups, or institutions you do
so as an individual. You should not present your views, ideas,
questions, or actions as representing Olomana School without
specific permission. Remember that your communications are always
identifiable as having an account with Olomana School. You must,
therefore, make it clear that your communications represent you
and not the institution.
- Olomana School requires an annual revalidation of this
Acceptable Use Policy by all students to retain their access to
the Internet and WAN. It is your responsibility to inform Olomana
School of any changes to your account information during a school
year.
4. Disclaimers
- Olomana School makes no warranties of any kind, whether
expressed or implied, for the service it is providing. Olomana
School specifically denies any responsibility for the accuracy or
quality of information obtained through the Internet/WAN.
- Olomana School will not be responsible for any damages you
suffer while using the Olomana School Internet/WAN system. This
includes loss of data resulting from delays, non-deliveries,
mis-deliveries, or service interruptions. Use of any information
obtained via Olomana School is at your own risk. All users of the
system are deemed to have disclaimed or waived all copyright
ownership rights in their messages or files, even if they contain
copyright notices. You shall have absolutely no recourse against
Olomana School or the DOE as the system provider for any alleged
or actual infringement of any proprietary rights to which you may
claim ownership.
5. Security
- Security of Olomana School's computer system is a high
priority. If you feel you can identify a security problem, you
must notify a teacher, or another Olomana School staff member. Do
not demonstrate or discuss the problem with other users. Do not
give your access information - login ID's, or passwords, to
another person and do not use another individual's access
information. Those found to have given access information to
anyone or who have attempted to login to an Olomana School
computer, network, Internet, or WAN using another person's account
will have their Internet/WAN privileges canceled.
6. Acceptance of Terms and

- All terms and conditions as stated in this document are
applicable to Olomana School's Internet and WAN computer networks.
These terms and conditions reflect the entire agreement of the
parties and supersedes all prior oral or written agreements and
understandings of the parties. These terms and conditions shall
be governed and interpreted in accordance with the laws of the
